You can be sent to collections for non-payment of any debt. Credit card and medical debt comprises the majority of debt in collections in the US. Credit card interest, fees and penalties continue to accrue throughout the collection effort. While the collections might start with the initial creditor, the debt will likely be sold to third-party collectors after six months.

You can be sent to collections for non-payment on a credit card bill. Part of the signing up for a credit card is agreeing to this.
