Question by  Mbn (32)

Will wine get skunked or go bad?

I found a bottle of wine in my home that I had forgotten about, is it safe for me to drink?

It will be safe, but it may not taste good. Wine can last for many years and there are no known pathogens that can survive in that amount of alcohol.

Some wines can go bad but generally you're safe. Remove the cork and take a look at the bottom (wet) end of it -- if it's rotten, soft, or crumbling then I wouldn't bother. If not, take a smell, take a small sip, and you'll know right away if it's "gone to vinegar" or still wholesome.

If the wine is cloudy, it may be contaminated with microorganisms and is unsafe to drink. Otherwise, it may have oxidized and taste bad, but is not unsafe.

Wine could go bad depending on the brand. When it's sealed improperly, it will have a definite weird taste. It's still safe for you to drink but it will just taste different than what it's suppose to taste like. Fresh wines from wineries and vineyards can withstand years of aging therefore, it is still safe.

Based on my experience, the wine is not unsafe but if it is not corked tightly is may have oxidized giving it a vinegary taste.
