The hernia can only be repaired with surgery. Get this fixed as soon as possible. In the meantime, it is recommended to avoid heavy exercise.

Any exercise that causes you to tense your abdomen and thus increase intra-abdominal pressure will cause strain on your umbilical hernia. Depending on the size you may need to get it fixed before starting your exercise program. See your doctor for an evaluation.

Exercise can often exacerbate any preexisting medical conditions. Try to avoid any overly or intentionally strenuous activities while recuperating. Give your body a chance to heal.

After a hernia operation walking will help in the recovery process. The patient must not do heavy lifting over five kilograms for two months after the operation. Avoid doing any yoga exercises straight after the operation . Walking up and down the stairs for as much as you can is permitted.

I was just diagnosed with an umbilical hernia. My surgeon said that lifting and exercise would "not" make any difference because the amount of daily/routine pressure and strain put on the abdomen would be greater. He did say it would get worse over time no matter what I do.

An Umbilical hernia is quite serious and generally requires surgeory. If you know you have one you should refrain from more than just exercise and go see your doctor/ report to the emergency room for a consultation. This sort of hernia cause strangulation of the bowel and is/can be very harmful if you are over the age of 3/4.

Doing exercise means bending and weight lifting by which the umbilical part will be pressured more means that will affect because it is the loosen of muscles so regular walking in a plain surface will protect and weight lifting has to be strictly avoided. Continuous sitting and standing will cause pain.

Strenuous exercises and lifting heavy objects will further hurt your umbilical hernia. It is best to avoid any activities that puts extra stress on your body. Sometimes surgical intervention is needed in order for the hernia to completely go away
