Why would a cat hide food?

To eat later! A cat in the wild will kill when ever it gets the chance and hide the body to come back to later. It's possible your tame tabby is doing the same thing.

The cat may hide food as a holdover of the wild trait of burying food for later. Or, it may be that he is trying to tell you that the food is not to his liking. They do this inorder to have the food after sometime. Some do this inorder to go to the loo and then have food.

Cats might hide food if they feel that their territory is being encroached upon. They like to feel that they have a safe spot to eat without interference.

As with many animals, this instinct is because it wants to make sure it will still have food to eat when hungry.
