While wandering in the desert for 40 years, the Israelites got thirsty. God told Moses (Moshe) to talk to the rock to make water. Moses hit the rock with a rod and water gushed. Moses took credit for it. For this disobedience and lack of faith Moses was punished harshly.

The Lord told Moses to gather his people together around a rock. He was supposed to speak to the rock and it would bring forth water for the people to drink. Instead of speaking to the rock Moses struck it twice with his staff. He disobeyed a direct order from God.

Moses was banned from the Promised Land because he sinned against God and God told him because of this he would not be able to go into the Promised Land. The actual sin that he comitted was that he smote the rock and caused water to come from it.
