Styrofoam peanuts in the bottom of a plant pot will give the plant water drainage so your plant won't drown if you over water it. You can also plastic trays made just for this, or gravel, although gravel will make you pot very heavy.

Well, mostly we do this to make plants lighter and easier to move. Personally, with certain plants I like them because they give breathing room, and allow space like we used to use pebbles for. They don't rot, or deteriorate, and allow room for water to disperse without root rot.

If your pot has holes in the bottom and a saucer underneath, you don't need them. They are used to provide drainage in a pot without holes. If you don't have peanuts, you can use small rocks or anything that won't compact and hold moisture.

Styrofoam peanuts could ostensibly help drainage while adding bulk to your plant pot. Sometimes, if the soil is packed too densely, water cannot get through and the roots of your plant will rot. It shouldn't hurt to put peanuts below the dirt, as long as there is enough actual soil too.
