Why is my Toyota 4-Runner overheating when coming to a stop?

Make sure the thermostat is not stuck shut. Make sure the coolant is at the correct level. Make sure the cooling fans turn on. If they don't, check the fuses.

This sounds like a sign of a bad cooling fan. As you travel down the road air is forced through your radiator but when you stop the cooling fan is supposed to pull cool air through it. It sounds like yours is not properly working and should be checked.
