Often the anaesthetic given during dental work is strong enough to numb other parts of the mouth other than where it was injected. This can cause a numbing sensation in the tongue. If you have not had anaesthetic, or if you are concerned, you should tell your dentist about it.

This is usually caused by the oral anesthetic, whether rubbed on with a Q-tip or injected into the gums. Since the tongue shares the same major blood vessels as the gums, the anesthetic affects the tongue as well.
