Low level of transmission fluid in the gearbox could be the reason for clunking sound while shifting gears. Check the level of fluid in the gearbox if required top up with transmission fluid specified in the users manual. This should solve the issue before it causes further damage to your transmission system and might result in hefty repair bills.

the gear spring might be loose. it might be a loose gear shifting lever. take it to a mechanic and it will cost you around 200 dollars to replace a spring

It sounds like you're having transmission problems. If your car is older, it's probably not worth getting a new tranny, but you could use a tune up to make it last longer. Take the car to a transmission specialist such as AAMCO. They have tune up rates that start at $59. You should be able to get another year.

This might be a problem in the transmission or with bad u-joints on the driveshaft. Worn suspension bushings can cause clunks too.
