This often occurs when the baby cannot breathe while nursing. Check for congestion or signs he cannot breathe while feeding, such as if your breast is pushing on his nose while he nurses. It is also possible that your milk tastes bad and he is protesting; look for pungent or bitter foods to stop eating in your diet.

Depending on what part of the feeding she does this, it could be many different problems. Reflux, low milk supply, heavy letdown, air in the tummy.

Maybe he is not hungry or laying in an uncomfortable position. Try repositioning him and if it continues you can check with one of your local lactation consultants.

The most likely culprit is teething. Even if you haven't seen any teeth poke through the gums yet, they may be working their way toward the surface. I sometimes think this is more painful than after the teeth break the surface. Each time your baby tries to nurse, it puts pressure on the gums which can cause pain.
