Alcohol decreases dopamine, the brain chemical that makes us feel pleasure, so we want to eat to make up for it. It also makes us less inhibited, hence poorer decisions.

Drinking can temporarily speed up your metabolism, which makes you hungry. It also pushes everything straight through you, making you have to pee more and the such, and when you body empties itself in that manner it becomes hungry again. I am sure there are other reasons as well.

Basically it's the sugar. The amount of sugar in the alcohol causes your blood sugar levels to spike high and the high blood sugar levels in turn cause you to become really hungry. All the sugars and the food causes a lot of weight gain so drink in moderation or you will start to gain weight.

You body sees being drunk as sort of an illness. So your body tells you what will heal you. When you eat, it helps sober you up very little.
