Why do you have to respect authority?

You should accord no more respect to any particular "authority" as you would to anyone else. In a true free society, you should respect the individual on his or her own merits, not their position or status. Only in monarchical or dictatorial societies is the unquestioned respect for authority mandated.

It is important to respect those in authority because it keeps order and structure in social situations. Generally, things run better in an organization when there is leadership.
