Turntables have a grounding system due to the movement that the DJ and dancing around causes. In other words if they were loose then the movement around the system may cause the records to skip and jump. Even an extremely loud bass could shift a record causing it to skip.

Turntables have grounding to imrpove the quality of audio, the vinyl will produce static electricity when it rotates and passes over the needle used to pick up the audio. This static would be detremental to the audio signal if it were to build up.

The friction between the vinyl and the needle creates static charge like rubbing a balloon to your head. If that builds up the you get crackles in the audio. When you ground the turntable the charge can flow off so there is no more difference in potential between the sound carrying parts.
