Why do states sponsor tax-free weekends?

Is it just to boost the economy, or is there more to it?

I think they do it to give folks a small break from the tax. I know Tennessee does this when folks are doing back-to-school shopping.

One of the main reasons for tax-free weekends is to aid the economy of the state. Another major reason behind the weekends is to help parents offset the cost of sending their children back to school and to help college bound students with their costs.
