music  singing  why

Question by  hope (8)

Why do some signers seem to do a one hand clap with the hand they are holding the microphone with?

Answer by  MelindaS (1694)

Usually if the singers are doing a pretend clap with the microphone, they want the audience to join them in clapping along with the rhythm. They can not really clap their hands holding a microphone because it would create a loud banging noise, so they do a sort of sign to clue in the audience.

I think most people that do this are just trying to keep rhythm. Some people do this when the are trying to get people to clap along with them, but they should clap into their wrist if their holding a mic, otherwise it just makes a horrible noise.

The most common reason is to get the audience involved by clapping and not to appear to be "just standing there".

For some singers it's to keep time with the beat of the music while they're singing, that way they can keep their place easier. For others it's simply enjoying the beat of the music.
