Ancient Egyptians are thought to be the inventors of straws. It is believed that straws prevented them drinking sizable fermentation particles. Paper straws came in the late 1800s and plastic straws in the 1930s. A current convenience of the straw is preventing corrosive beverages from damaging the teeth.

There's much less coordination involved in getting liquid through a little tube than getting your mouth around the stream of water coming out of a wide rimmed glass. I think it was astronauts who came up with the idea. It makes sense, zero gravity must make things impossible.
