People write viruses for different reasons. A virus could be written as a proof of concept that demonstrates a specific vulnerability in software. One could be written as a challenge for a programmer. People also write viruses to create botnets or send spam for financial gain.

Reasons people send viruses include gaining control over a computer, generating money by getting people to pay for programs, getting access to sensitive information like credit card numbers, showing off, making a political point, or bringing a network to a halt.

Viruses are a programe based software it is useful for protecting cds from copying etc. It is also used for collecting secret datas from other computers.

Many times they would try to get your personal information or mislead into giving credit card information. Ultimately they want to make money. Antivirus software is a huge market too.
