Eyelids get red when you are tired because your eyes have been open for most of the time. To let it maintain open, blood flow must increase so muscles can function. blood accounts for the increased redness.

Well this is a common reaction. If you are very tired, your eyes need rest and the nerves are showing your body's reaction.

your eyes get red when you are tired because they tend to dry out as time goes by. The dryness causes the eyes to get irritated as their is little moisture on them to keep them wet. The redness appears because the veins in the eyes become pronounced. Your eyes may also feel scratched.

A lot of it might have to do with the fact that when you are sleepy your body slows down. Your oxygen production slows down.

Our eyes get red when we are tired because of the lack of moisture. Blinking is supposed to rejuvenate moisture, but as we get exhausted, that moisture diminishes. You can regain some moisture(but not get rid of the redness), by closing your eyes hard and opening them repeatedly.
