Why do my dogs like to dig in my mulch?

They do this simply because they are programmed to do it; in other words it is an instictive activity. It is also a way for them to releive stress, or bordem as well. It's along the same lines as chewing a bone. It's entertaining to them and keeps them occupied.

Your dog is probably trying to hide a bone or other object. You can put cayenne pepper in your mulch and that should stop him from digging.

This would have to be because of the soft and dampness of the mulch. It's just the kind of thing dogs love to roll in and even do other bits of business. Its closer to soil and dirt after a good decent rainstorm. Some dogs are known to make a bed out of the mulch.

Because it is soft and damp and full of all kinds of smells that dogs just love. It is a lot like the soil after a good summer rain. My dogs will dig out a small depression in the mulch and then roll around in it to make a bed out of it.

Digging is an instinct. It is a nesting urge. Dogs also like to bury things and get very excited when they can.
