Why do more people live in eastern states than in the western states?

There a re a lot of reasons, some historical, some climatological. The East has had longer to grow for one thing. People started arriving on the East Coast in the 1500's. Americans didn't move to the West Coast in large numbers until the 1800's - a 300 year headstart. But there's also more fertile and well-watered land in the East.

More people live the eastern states because of the cost of living. It is much more reasonable in terms of the cost of houses. The northeast is an especially populous region. Some are fond of the big city of New York. Others enjoy the South for it's southern comfort, food, and warm weather.
