What's going on is war. Soldiers fly commercial to staging areas for deployments to Iraq/Afghanistan. They also fly commercial when they return home. They travel in groups and are always in uniform, usually BDUs (what used to be called "fatigues), which are various camouflaged prints, depending on the service.

Soldiers in the airport may be on leave, traveling between their assigned bases and their families or other vacation destinations. Soldiers also often use commercial air transport to go from one assigned base to another one, since that's often cheaper than using military transportation. Generally there's no emergency or other scary reason for this.

To get to and from where they are deployed to, or new assignments, many military members utilize commercial airlines. There are probably more out of uniform than you think.
