Well, it's not because he enjoys it! They smell poop to seek out predators or to find the markings of other dogs. Dogs mark their territory with poop just as they do with urine. A male dog may be smelling female poop or a sweet dog an agressive dog.

There are a few reasons they do it one a male dog will do it to see if a female is in heat they will do it to identify each other.
