The ship was designed so that 2-3 of it's 16 compartments could take on water and the ship would stay afloat. The iceberg damaged 6 of the 16 compartments.

The Titanic was designed to be able to withstand a hull puncture, but it rammed an iceberg at high speed. Too much of the hull was damaged for the safety mechanisms in place, and she went down. She could handle taking on water in 4 compartments, but 5 were damaged and taking on water.
