Why are there more brick houses on the east coast than on the west coast?

Most of the houses on the west coast are wood construction.

I think its mostly due to earthquakes. Brick houses have lots of advantages, but they simply don't work as well in earthquake country, so its not an option in places like California.

This probably has to do with tradition. We have many brownstones in New England. Practically, wood houses do better with earthquakes and we have few of those in the east.

The higher population density in the east effectively stripped the area of lumber. As people moved west, they found vast reserves of forested areas. Wood was cheap and plentiful.

The reason there are more brick houses on the east coast is because bricks is made out of mud; basically. Homes that are made out of wood have to be grown where there is room for trees, and if they are transported to the east coast from the west you would have to pay for a truck.

For the most part bricks are made in the south and south east, the high cost of transporting bricks across the States have resulted in less brick houses.
