Question by  apple (447)

Why are FedEx and UPS drivers always running everywhere they go?

Do their employers work them THAT hard or do they have a financial incentive to deliver more packages in a day?

Delivery drivers are assigned a route, which must be completed prior to going home for the day. Therefore, if they run, they get their route finished quicker.

FedEx and UPS drivers, as well as USPS drivers, are told specifically that they are not supposed to run to finish their routes in time. The sad fact of the matter is that they are given routes sized to require them to run. Catch-22.

I have never noticed this, but i would assume it is because they have a certain amount of packages that must be delivered within that day.

They won't make money if they don't deliever all their packages in one day. They work on commission, and this is how Fed Ex and UPS drivers get all of their money. That's just how their system works, even if it's faulty. They have to deliver a certain number of packages per day to make their quota.

they probably are paid by just finishing their deliveries and not by the hours of work being paid and everything. so it doesnt matter about taking your time, they want to finish it as soon as possible so they can just leave and go home or get something to eat then.

The reason is because they are on a fix schedule to deliver each package or pick up each package in a small amount of time, so you see running helps them pick up or deliever it faster.
