Charles Mason nudged out Robert E. Lee by 29 points to graduate as valedictorian. Mason bested Lee in every subject except for "Tactics, Artillery, and Conduct" in which the two were tied. After graduation, Mason served in the Army for only two years. He became a patent lawyer and was the first Chief Justice of the Iowa Supreme Court.
