Howard, born Samuel Horowitz, was a Vaudeville actor. He and his brother Moe were part of The Three Stooges. Shemp left the act, then came back, to replace Curly.

Shemp Howard was a comic actor. He is the brother to two of the Three Stooges, Moe and Curly. When Curly took ill, he reluctantly took his place as part of the Three Stooges so the act could continue. However, Curly was not able to return so Shemp went on in his stead.

Shemp Howard was one of the Three Stooges. Shemp actually was one of the three original Stooges (with Larry and Moe), who was eventually replaced by the very popular Curly
