From a study-of-religion perspective, the whole point of having a God is so you have one entity to point to as a supposed universal creator. Allowing for God to have a creator leads inevitably to a polytheist situation, so the God is usually painted as somehow immune from requiring creation as a way of avoiding this.

The definition of God is as variable as the many cultures and beliefs that are spread throughout the planet. It is a question that none of as can answer with absolute certainty. Historically speaking, Gods where imaginary creations used by ancient cultures across the globe to try and explain the natural world in lieu of advanced scientific knowledge and findings.
