Admiral Gary Roughead, a 1973 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, became the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) on September 29, 2007. Prior to that, he commanded fleets both in the Atlantic and Pacific, served as commandant of the Naval Academy, and as deputy commander, U. S. Pacific Command.

The Chief of Naval Operations, or CNO for short, is the highest ranking officer in the United States Navy and is also part of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The current CNO is Admiral Gary Roughead. He is the 29th CNO and has been in the position since September of 2007.
