Raoul Duke is a fictional character created by Hunter S. Thompson. The name Raoul Duke came from Raul Castro, the brother of Fidel Castro, and John Wayne's nickname "The Duke". It is said the Raoul Duke is Hunter S. Thompson's alter ego. In Thompson's works, Raoul Duke is oftentimes under the influence of drugs.

I don't believe I know who Raoul Duke is. Nor do I know who this Hunter S. Thompson is either. Hunter may have interviewed Raoul. I'm not even sure they have ever met. Although Hunter could have conducted his interview through the telephone or perhaps they mailed letters to each other.
