Kunta Kinte is the central fictional character in the novel 'Roots' by author Alex Haley. Kunta Kinte is a newly-arrived African slave made to serve on a Virginia plantation, where he is given the name 'Toby' by the slave master. He is the main protagonist of the novel and is seen as representing the author's own slave ancestors.

Kunta Kinte was an ancestor of the writer Alex Haley. He was captured in Africa by members of another tribe and sold into slavery. He lived in the United States as a slave. He was also the subject of an American made-for-tv movie, 'Roots' which was based on Alex Haley's book of the same name.
