Generally you are exempt from income taxes if your income is under $8950 single or $17900 joint for 2008. If you (or spouse if applicable) are 65 or over the amount is a little higher. If you have self employment income, you may need to file regardless.

Whether or not you have to file taxes is mainly determined by income. The exact amount changes from year to year, and you should check with the IRS for the current number. Some people, such as the self-employed or those earning more than a certain level of investment income, have to file regardless.

You are exempt from filing taxes if you make less than a certain amount of money, usually around $3,000 if you can be claimed as someone else's dependent and around $8,000 if you are a single, independent adult. Check tax codes or google for more more specifics.
