The clock is one of the oldest inventions known to man, dating all the way back to sundials in ancient times. Andronicus of Cyrrhus, a Greek astronomer already understood clock technology during the first century. Mechanical clocks were thought to have emerged as early as the 13th Century, although unfortunately there are no examples left from that era.

The main precursor to th clocks we use today, the quartz crystal oscillator was invented by Walter G. Cady in 1921.
