The oldest character has been Ken Barlowe played by William Roache. He has been with the program since 1960.Emily Bishop played by Eileen Derbyshire started in 1961. The third oldest character is Rita Sullivan played by Barbara Knox who started in 1964 and left but returned in 1972 to reprise her role.

According to IMDB, Ken Barlow has appeared on over 1400 episodes spanning 1960-2010. Gail Plat and Steve McDonald have also appeared in over a thousand episodes. Emily Bishop has not appeared in as many episodes, but has been a character since 1961.
