Although nobody can be 100 per cent sure without a time machine, many historians and lingustic experts believe the Basque language (spoken in certain areas of Spain and France)to be the oldest in Europe. it is thought it could have been spoken as early as 2,000 years before the birth of Christ.

The oldest language spoken in Europe was Proto-Indo-European, which is known to have existed at least 5000 years ago. An early form of Greek is known to have separated from Proto-Indo-European some 4000 years ago and is probably the earliest recognizable language spoken in Europe.
