To engage the emergency brake you will first find it beside your left leg, often by your foot. The actual brake is on both the front and rear axels, which allows friction on all four discs to be evenly distributed for maximum braking efficiency. It is also the same for 4X4's.

The lever can be found in the same location in the car in all different drive arrangement. The same can be said about the brakes themselves located in the rear.
