MRSA is a bacteria commonly found on the skin and nasal passages of many people. It is a strain of staphylococcus aureus which is resistant to most antibiotics, which is why it is such a difficult infection to treat. Infection occurs when the bacteria passes from the surface of the skin into a wound site.

MRSA stands for methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus. Staphylococcus aureus lives on our skin and in our noses and normally causes no problems. MRSA strains are resistant to many antibiotics, which makes it more difficult to treat. People with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable. Widespread overuse of antibiotics over the years has caused MRSA to develop.
