At attorney who only collects a fee in the event of an agreeable settlement, or judgment in favor of his or her client is said to work on contingency. These attorneys most commonly work in areas of the law like personal injury. Just ask whether the lawyer works on contingency.

You are looking for an attorney willing to be paid on a 'contingency-fee basis'. That means his fee is contingent (dependent upon) getting an award or settlement. Look in your local phone book or call the state bar association to see if they have a referral service.

Some attorneys will take cases "on contingency," meaning that they will take a percentage of proceeds. This is common in personal injury cases. Otherwise, they are paid up front.
