In ancient Greece and Rome, festivals were held to honor the mother goddesses. In early Christianity, a specific Sunday during Lent was set aside to honor "mother church" and it was common for small gifts to be given to the women of the congregation. The modern version of Mother's Day was created by Ann Jarvis of West Virginia.

The modern American Mother's Day was invented by Anna Jarvis in Grafton, West Virginia in order to honor mothers and motherhood. She eventually came to oppose the holiday after it became an over-commercialized "Hallmark Holiday" in her words.

On May 9, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a joint resolution of Congress recommending that the federal government observe Mother's Day, and the following year Wilson was authorized to proclaim it as a national holiday. Julia Ward Howe was the first to suggest a day to honor mothers.

No one can actually pin point where it originated from. Mothers day or a day honoring godesses can date back to the ancient times. This includes civilizations such as the Greeks and the Romans.
