Where are the best places to live in California?

I have grown up in the Kern River Valley, and I while I love all California, this place is by the far the most beautiful. VERY small community! And cheap!

San Diego is one of the best places. It has little crime and the cost of living is rather up there but what place isn't in California? You'd have to search for hot, uncomfortable, crime ridden cities to find a place whose cost of living is not high up in the sky.
