The first video cameras were invented in the 1930s by John Logie Baird. In the 1940s, video cameras based on the cathode ray tube (CRT) were invented and remained in popular use until the 1980s when more advanced cameras were invented. Modern cameras use an image sensor which turns the image into electrical signals.

The earliest video cameras were those of John Logie Baird. They were used by the BBC in experimental broadcasts through the 1930s. All-electronic designs based on the cathode ray tube, replaced the Baird system by the 1940s and remained until the 1980s, when cameras based on solid-state image are used.

Though similar technologies date back to the 1920s, video cameras themselves were invented in 1951. Of course, film cameras date back to the late 19th century - that's what the first movies were shot with, and it was not until the 1970s that film was overtaken by the ease of video cameras.
