This incident was a crucial battle in 216BCE during the height of the Roman Republic. Cannae is located in southeastern Italy. The Romans lost a huge number of soldiers in the fight against Hannibal's invading army. The battle was such a decisive defeat for the Romans that several of their vassals in the area defected to Hannibal.
