If the urinary output for a person has slowed down or diminished, there should be some type of bloodwork done to make sure that the kidneys are adequately filtering not only liquid waste but also the right amounts of chemicals such as potassium and proteins.

If your urine output is low or when there is hematuria (blood in urine) then you can go for a kidney blood test. Creatinine, protein level in the test is very important, it determines the function of the kidneys. Kidney damage can lead to so many problems hence it must be rectified in the begining.

It is necessary to have a kidney blood test if you have or suspect you have diabetes. Also, if you accidently ingest some poison, you should get the test.

Some medication does effect the kidneys. So blood work is normal. If you have a normal check-up and blood work done the doctor needs to know if your kidneys are functioning well. This is also a normal procedure. Going to the bathroom does not indicate that you have good kidneys.
