Catholics are instructed to give something up during Lent. Many give up meat. Many give up meat on Friday because Christ died on Friday, and they abstain from blood.

Extremely strict followers of the religion will not eat meat on Fridays, all year long. The large majority of people in the Catholic faith will abstain from eating meat only on Fridays during Lent, which is the forty days leading up to Easter.
