When do alimony payments stop?

I've been paying her longer than I was married to her.

This all depends on your state and situation. The period of the marriage does not determine when the payments are to cease. For most states and cases these payments have to continue until one person passes being the wife or husand. Also if the person who gets alimony gets remarried then alimony would then stop.

Read your divorce order. It should contain either conditions that must be met to terminate the payments or define a time period for the payments. Consult an attorney about a petition to the court to end the alimony.

The order for spousal support is part of the divorce decree. There should be language in the paperwork regarding the duration of the payments, if such terms were agreed upon. Otherwise, the payments will continue until she remarries.
