The roots of the Methodist denomination of Christianity can be traced to the 1730s, when Reverend John Wesley formed an evangelistic revival movement within the Anglican Church. Methodists make use of tradition and reason in determining doctrine. Salvation is dependent upon service to one's fellow man, not just personal piety.

The Methodist church/ religion began in the 18th century in England. It began as small groups who studied the Bible within the Anglican church. These groups were called 'Methodist societies' and spread throughout England under the inspiration and leadership of John and Charles Wesley. As the immigration continued at the time to America, so did the Methodist church.
