First you have to make sure you have no signs of medical emergency such as fever, persistent irritating cough, strong chest pain. If those are missing you might try exercising moderately, eating more fruits and vegetables, drinking lots of liquids, practice endurance sport like running, swimming. If you smoke you should quit. Try Vitamin supplements and massage.

Normally by going to the doctor and asking their opinion. Sometimes it may be something worse than the common cold if it's been going on much longer than a month or so.

One of the best things to use for congestion is a humidifier. Use this at night along with a decongestant and it should help to alleviate the symptoms. Also, remember to wash your hands frequently. And throw out your toothbrush at that first sign of a cold, as they can harbor germs that can cause your cold to hang around.

Maybe you haven't had a cold. Maybe it's a sinus infection. In the morning I use a niti pot to clean out my nostrils. This does loosen the congestion. I would see a doctor and get something that will reduce the congestion> This is also a cause of loosing sleep. Get help.
