It began in 1851 when a deposit was discovered close to Bathhurst in New South Wales at a site later called Ophir. Within the next six months, gold was discovered in 3 other regions.

Although some gold was found in Australia during the 1940s, the Gold Rush is commonly considered to have begun in 1951 when Edward Hammond Hargraves discovered gold at Ophir. Over the following decade, gold was found in most Australian states and Australia in fact produced around one third of the gold in the world at that time.
