What were the elite units of the Roman armies?

The Roman elite troops were known as the centurions. This is in reference to the number 100 (another example is century) and used because they were assigned in groups of 100 on the battlefield. Usually this would represent the top 100 soldiers.

Praetorians were a special unit of body guards for the Roman emperors. There were also several other special units over the history of the republic and empire.

In the later part of the Roman Empires reign, their elite units were called the "Palatini" which is latin for "Palace Troops".

The most famous of Rome's elite units was the Praetorian Guard, at it's height the Emperor's personal "army" number ten cohorts or five thousand soldiers.
