What were galley slaves and what did they do?

Galley slaves where slaves used as oar man on a boat. They were used for trade and during time of warfare. Prisoners of War and criminals often carried out these duties.

They were, essentially, slaves that stayed below decks and performed many functions for the ship. Implied by the term slave obviously they were owned by the ship.
